Unwind at Evergreen Dental
At Evergreen Dental, we take pride in providing the most relaxing experience. Sedation in dentistry is the use of medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. In combination with TVs on all ceilings, weighted blankets, and blackout glasses, the goal of sedation is to make the patient comfortable and reduce anxiety or pain.
Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as laughing gas, is a type of conscious sedation used in dentistry procedures to help patients relax and manage pain or anxiety. The nitrous oxide is inhaled through a mask or nasal hood and acts quickly to produce feelings of calmness and well-being. The patient remains awake and able to respond to commands during the procedure but may have a dream-like or fuzzy memory of the experience. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly after the mask is removed and you are able to drive home.
Conscious sedation allows for full-body relaxation that makes you feel sleepy. The goal is for spontaneous eye closure and a sense of relaxation. Remember that you are not sleeping through the entire procedure or completely out of it. We need you to respond to commands for opening and closing. The sedation medication we give at our office is a combination of triazolam and diphenhydramine.
Most patients do not remember the procedure, and you will need a ride home afterwards as the medication lasts from 6-8 hours. During the procedure, we will need to monitor your blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and heart rate. We will need to obtain your medical history and have you read through our sedation forms that can be downloaded. All information is provided in the forms that will get you to read and sign prior to the appointment.
Dr. Piche took his hospital residency at Western University and is able to provide IV Sedation at a separate dental location. Intravenous (IV) sedation is a type of conscious sedation used in dentistry to help patients relax and feel more comfortable during procedures. The sedative drug is administered directly into the bloodstream through an IV line, which allows for quick and controlled delivery of the medication. The goal of IV sedation is to produce a state of deep relaxation and reduced awareness so that the patient is less anxious and more cooperative during dental treatment. The patient is awake and responsive, but they may not remember much of the procedure.
If you are interested in being completely sedated, there are options in a hospital setting to receive IV sedation or general anesthesia.
Please Note: IV Sedation is performed at a separate location
Certified by the Manitoba Dental Association, our dentists provide conscious oral sedation and answer any appointment-related questions you may have.
SEDATION MENU
At Evergreen Dental we understand that our patients may require sedation to tolerate needles and dental treatment, or to suppress a strong gag reflex. Our goal is to keep our patients as relaxed and comfortable as possible to complete dental treatment and meet their needs. We offer a range of sedation options to make this possible. The following are the sedation options offered by us:
No Sedation
Topical benzocaine followed by regular dental freezing
Nitrous Sedation (Laughing Gas)
This gas is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose and begins acting quickly. Patients can expect a relaxed “floating on a cloud” sensation to help tolerate dental treatment. Once done, the effects are quickly reversed by administering 100% oxygen and patients can walk out and drive home on their own.
Oral Conscious Sedation
Great for anxious patients or for longer procedures. Patients arrive 1-hour prior to their procedure and receive anti-anxiety pills as well as a drink to induce drowsiness. Patients remain awake however are “groggy” and typically may not remember most of the treatment. A ride is required to and from the appointment as the medications can last up to 8 hours.
IV Sedation
Ideal for severely anxious patients or more invasive procedures. A mixture of medications is given to patients in increments through an IV placed in their hand or forearm until a desired effect is achieved. The medications take effect quickly and the patient experiences a deeper sense of relaxation. The patient remains conscious although they will likely feel like they were asleep during the procedure. Most patients experience amnesia and will likely not remember the appointment. A ride is required to and from the appointment and the patient is considered “sedated” for 24 hours and should not drive or operate machinery and take appropriate time off.
Please Note: IV Sedation is performed at a separate location
